Woman indicted on drug, theft charges

RICHMOND — A Madison County grand jury indicted a Mt. Vernon woman Wednesday on drug and theft charges stemming from a August incident at the Berea Walmart.

Shawndra Michelle Chasteen, 41, was arrested and booked into the Madison County Detention Center on Aug. 7 and released the same day on a $2,500 unsecured third-party bond.

According to the indictment, Chasteen took merchandise valuing less than $500 from the Walmart store in Berea. Upon her arrest, officers from the Berea Police Department found Chasteen to be in possession of an undisclosed number of oxycodone (Percocet) and hydrocodone (Lortab) pills on her person.

She was indicted on charges of first-degree possession of a controlled substance, a Class D felony, second-degree possession of a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor and theft by unlawful taking less than $500.

If convicted of all charges, Chasteen could serve a maximum of seven years in prison.

Other indictments:

• Anthony Mitchell, first-degree possession of a controlled substance, a Class D felony; and possession of marijuana, a Class A misdemeanor. If convicted on all charges, Mitchell could serve up to six years in jail.

• Lisa A. Smith, first-degree possession of a controlled substance, a Class D felony; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor. If convicted, Smith could serve up to six years in jail.

• Ronnie P. Leedy, first-degree criminal mischief, a Class D felony. If convicted, Leedy could serve a maximum of five years in prison.

An indictment does not imply guilt, only that the grand jury believes the state has enough evidence to try the case.
